What's the point of tracking?
If you don't track...
👉 You create content for the sake of being consistent hoping that consistency on your chosen platform will magically make everything else in your business work.
👉 Because you are creating content with consistency in mind, you often create content that doesn't really help you sell your offer.
👉 You don't test different marketing angles to find the ones that get people to check out your offer. Or you do, but you don't know which ones are working because you're not tracking them.
👉 You panic tweak sales pages or emails without knowing if that page needs tweaking in the first place (maybe not enough people have seen it yet).
How retail practices inspired this system
I used to work in retail buying, for a mail order catalogue.
There were 2 rules that guided our buying decisions.
1. Every product had to earn its page space.
When I started my job, my very first task was to measure how much page space each product got in the catalogue.
I’d use a ruler and pencil to figure out the percentage of the page each product took, then track it in a master spreadsheet.
This data was crucial, if a product took up space but didn’t earn it's space in sales, we dropped it or gave it less space for the next season.
2. Use data to spot trends in what our customers are into right now
When I was promoted, I was given my own range to buy (flooring and rugs).
I looked at our sales data split out by colour, material, texture, pattern and size to spot trends in what our customers were into. So we could sell them more of what they liked and drop the stuff they didn't like.
We can use both of these rules to help us understand our customers and our marketing efforts, so we can do more of the things that lead to sales. Using Notion, means we don't need a pencil and ruler to do it.
It's nice to meet you
