You’ve heard of Pinterest, it’s that place with all of the pretty pictures. Maybe you go on there every now and then to find a new recipe to cook, but have you ever thought of it as a marketing tool? Yes, you heard me right, a marketing tool! I know what your next question is – are my clients even on Pinterest? What is the Pinterest audience? My aim is to tell you a bit more about that in this post.
General Pinterest Audience Statistics
First off, we’ll start with some general statistics:
- 250 million people use Pinterest every month
- 98% have tried something new that they found on Pinterest
- 84% use Pinterest when they are trying to decide what to buy
- 77% have discovered a new brand or product.
Those stats are pretty amazing! Here is something else pretty interesting: Half of Pinterest users earn $50K or greater per year, with 10 percent of Pinterest households making greater than $125K. Source: Onicore Agency
So Pinterest users have money to spend! Now you know the general stats, here’s how to find out if your target audience is on there.
If you know the questions your clients or customers are asking, then go on to Pinterest and ask them in the search bar. If the answers pre-populate or come up as a suggestion below the keyword that you enter then you know people are using Pinterest to look for a solution.
As you can see, there are lots of searches for a holistic nutritionist and lots of topics surrounding that.
You can do this for local, geographic businesses too although there are likely to be less results depending on the size of the city that you are based in. I’m from Aberdeen and it’s a pretty small city.
What if I offer something really niche / obscure.
If you offer something quite unique this method may not work but you can find out more info about if your target audience demographic are on Pinterest. Here are the steps:
- You need to sign up for a free business account at business.pinterest.com to get access to the analytics.
- Go to analytics > Audience Insights and select the ‘All Pinterest Users’ tab
- From there you can search by age, gender and interests – the interests go into a fair bit of detail and could be under a number of topics so be sure to search extensively.

Pinterest is still way behind Facebook and Instagram in terms of numbers but you can use that to your advantage. Less entrepreneurs and businesses are using Pinterest as a marketing tool so you can gain an unfair advantage by marketing on there and have a much higher chance of being seen and heard through Pinterest than you do on Facebook and Instagram (unless you’re a mega influencer of course).
Pinterest is an amazing way to become known as an authority in your niche and to grow your audience. Unlike Instagram and Facebook, the whole point of Pinterest is to send traffic to your site. Pinterest wants your link, they want users to click through to your content and to consume what you are offering. Facebook and Instagram want to keep their users on their platforms so they don’t make it so easy for you to get users on to your own site.
Once users are on your site, it’s the perfect opportunity to get them on to your email list. Pinterest is great for email list growth but we’ll save that topic for another day.
